A truly visionary designer right from the start, the creator of the 'Le Smoking' dinner suit for women revolutionized women's fashions and contributed to their emancipation. At the age of 18, Yves Saint Laurent came to Paris to study fashion design at the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. He came to the notice of Christian Dior, who decided to hire him as a designer for his label. When Dior died in 1957, Yves Saint Laurent became the fashion house's artistic director. A few years later in 1961, Yves Saint Laurent founded his own label with the help of his friend Pierre Bergé. In 1966, he opened a boutique in Paris and launched his first ready-to-wear line « Saint Laurent Rive Gauche ».
He invented trouser suits for women, as well as safari jackets, trench coats and reefer jackets. In 1969 he designed a line of menswear. In 1977, Yves Saint Laurent launched his first fragrance, Opium, and one year later a range of make-up. Despite his undeniable success, the talented designer announced his departure in 2002, leaving the fashion house in the hands of its creative director Tom Ford, who was succeeded by Stefano Pilati in 2004. In 2008, the talented couturier said his final farewells and died of brain cancer.
Saint Laurent today :
Renamed Saint Laurent as a tribute to the first brand founded by Yves Saint Laurent in 1966, the fashion house has been in the hands of its artistic director, Hedi Slimane, since 2012.
